The plot takes place in the Russian city of Kalinov, next to the Volga River, in the decade of the 1860s. It revolves around Katia, a married woman who has an affair during the absence of her husband. While other characters are weakly portrayed, Katia herself receives the most memorable music and dominates the opera. It ends with the departure of his lover and the subsequent suicide of Katia.
